Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General, World Trade Organization
The world is home to 1.8 billion young people and the youth population is growing fastest in the poorest nations (UNFPA).
In LDCs, young people make up 32% of the population, compared to 17% in developed countries (UNFPA).
Of the 1.8 billion people living in fragile contexts and conflict areas around the world, 40% or 600 million are youth (UNDP).
Trade for Peace Future Leaders is a youth engagement platform within the scope of the WTO Trade for Peace (T4P) Programme.
The T4P Programme calls for increased collaboration between the trade, peace and humanitarian communities, creating opportunities for establishing creative and interdisciplinary approaches to leveraging the multilateral trading system for peace and stability.
Acknowledging the need to further engage with the youth and the important role that they play in advancing peace and security and shaping the future of trade, Trade for Peace: Future Leaders will focus its activities on youth from 15 to 32 years old in pursuit of four objectives:
(1) Bringing together and better engaging youth involved in the fields of trade and peace;
(2) Raising awareness on the reality of youth involvement in conflict and on the essential role they can play in building peace through trade;
(3) Giving a platform for youth voices in peacebuilding efforts through trade; and
(4) Fostering youth creative-thinking and innovative solutions for trade and peace.
These objectives are operationalized through two channels: Dialogue and Action.
